Drivel about Salsa
my journey through salsa started with sheer impetus.
it's been laced with plenty of unhappiness, but my snuffy hubby turned up somewhere along the way, so things weren't all that bad. =P
i started my basics with jitterbugs swingapore more than two years back, did an intermediate with attitude dance studio and went on to ladc for the rest of my salsa lessons.
sometime in the middle, i learnt rueda casino with j&j and later entertained the idea of joining a performance team; either salsa fanatico at jitterbugs or dragones latinos at ladc.
i joined vivasalsa, a group that was formed out of the member's sheer love for salsa.
they weren't technical dancers, but loved salsa enough to want to better themselves in it and perform it for the masses.
i have now left viva, partially because of my new priorities in preparing for my wedding and school.
and in part because its wholesome objectives seem to have strayed (but that's another story).
i, too, am not a technical dancer. but i do teach salsa at Caliente@Studio82.
i also have to disclaim that i do not rank amongst the best of salsa dancers in singapore.
but i do love it enough to want to share it, and believe i can break things down enough for students to digest it.
and in that sense, i AM technical.
prospective students tend to want to learn from good dancers who look good on the dancefloor.
it's something we're all guilty of - counting on pure face value.
that said, i don't not look good social dancing. =P
i'm not up there among the best of them technically, but i do have a personal style.
take the analogy of music and look at people like babes conde and john lee (dick lee's brother).
they're the ones who coach musical theater practitioners and contemporary recording artists but don't, themselves, come out into the limelight too often.
i am guilty of not doing my salsa homework before i started in late 2004, but if i had gone to a school where i felt was amazing enough for me to stay through its levels, i wouldn't have felt compelled to try out the styles of other schools.
my salsa journey has now morphed into my dance journey.
which should, beyond the wedding and honeymoon, include jazz, hip hop and ballroom.
and thank goodness the hubby's in on all those as well. =)
